Serb prosecutor Vukcevic receives death threat
The Serbian prosecutor in charge of the hunt for war crimes fugitives has received a death threat mailed from the United States, his office said on Wednesday.
"This was one in a series of such letters, mostly mailed from the region of Chicago with a large Serbian community," said Bruno Vekaric, spokesman for prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic. Vekaric said that Vukcevic was told in the letter that he will receive "a bullet in his head" because he is engaged in arresting top Bosnian Serb war crimes suspects that include the wartime army commander, Gen. Ratko Mladic, and his political leader Radovan Karadzic. Mladic and Karadzic have been charged by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, for genocide in the 1995 massacre of more than 7,000 Muslims at Srebrenica during the Bosnian war. The letter also says that Vukcevic is a Serb "traitor" who is serving the UN tribunal's interests "instead of protecting our heroes," Vekaric said. He said that the prosecutor's office will contact the US Embassy in Belgrade "to see what they can do about those continuous threats."
